Why Make Weight Loss Resolutions You Can’t Keep!

Hello with a New Year not that far away I bet you’ve made a few weight loss resolutions that given time to think about it you might want to reconsider.

Setting Outlandish Weight Loss Goals

One of the worst resolutions we all make is setting an unrealistic number for the amount of weight we want to lose. You might say I’m going to lose 50 pounds by May 1st. Now you and I know that this goal is not going to be easy to reach in the time we may allot ourselves to do so. A more reasonable approach is not to set the bar too high this way you are less likely to become frustrated if you don’t meet the target. A better idea is to give you a standard that can be reached without starving yourself in order to reach it, let’s say we try to lose 5 pounds over 4 weeks. You can cut back on portion sizes and add in a walk of 30 minutes to an hour most days of the week and before you know it a month has gone by and you have lost those five pounds. Scale this up over the coming months adding better food choices like more fruit and vegetables to your menu and you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish.

Skipping Breakfast

Another resolution we make is not to have breakfast, that’s a mistake. Having breakfast gets your metabolism off to a good start and helps you stay stoked all day. Additionally studies have shown that people who skip breakfast are more inclined to binge eat because they have not had sufficient fuel to start the day. Consequently these folks are more inclined to gain weight rather than lose it, so don’t skip breakfast. You can have a bowl of oatmeal in the morning the whole grains help you feel full longer, if you are concerned about heart health oatmeal has been shown to reduce cholesterol. Add some almonds and raisins in your bowl and you’ve got a great breakfast any day of the week!

I’ll Get A Gym Membership

Have you seen this one, we start out highly motivated to join a gym and commit to working out and end up rarely going. And most gyms these days want to have you sign up for the recurring payment option where the payments are taken monthly from your checking account. I know quite a few people who have these payments coming out and don’t go to the gym. Here on the East coast we have a blizzard coming how many people do you know of who will brave a blizzard to get to the gym? Yeah I thought so. Why not buy a piece of home gym equipment instead and you will be able to get your workout in regardless of what Mother Nature throws your way.

I’m Giving Up Dessert

Yeah right! We all endeavor to give up dessert but this can be very hard to do. And when you have been working hard on changing you eating habits and get regular exercise there is nothing wrong with treating yourself to dessert now and then. And if you don’t totally deprive yourself you’ll be less likely to binge on sweets. Just remember have a slice of cake not a half a cake you’ll be fine.

These are but a few resolutions we make that we are not likely to hold to, so don’t make your resolutions too hard to stick with. Oh before I forget “Happy New Year”!
